OK Sandra... My Daughter Doesn't Talk to Me Anymore.
The letter
Sandra,
My daughter and I used to talk every day. Now she answers texts three days later and tells me almost nothing about her life. When I ask questions she says I'm interrogating her.
I don't know what I did. I don't even know if I did anything.
— Still Her Mother, 57
Sandra says
You may not have done one thing. Sometimes closeness changes shape and both people experience it as loss.
But let me ask you something, mother to mother: when she used to tell you everything, what happened afterward? Was it received, or was it evaluated? Many daughters go quiet not because they stopped loving their mothers, but because every disclosure came back with a correction attached. If she's told you 'you're interrogating me,' she has already given you the note. The question is whether you can hear it as information instead of rejection.
Also true: she's 26. Some of this is not about you at all. Building a separate life requires a door, and doors sometimes get closed harder than necessary while she figures out how to install one.
Try switching from questions to offers. 'I made too much soup, want some?' 'Saw this and thought of you.' No follow-up question. No audit. You are re-establishing that contact with you is low-cost.
And say the honest sentence out loud, once: 'I miss you. I'm not asking you to report to me. I just want to be in your life at whatever size fits.' Then let her set the size.
Think about this
- When she used to tell you things, what did she get back?
- What is the smallest amount of contact you could genuinely be at peace with?
- Is there an old apology you've never actually made?
What would you tell her?
Mothers and daughters both read this one. Which side are you on today?

Before you go...
- What part of this sounded familiar?
- What would you tell your best friend if she were in this situation?
- What are you afraid will happen if you say what you actually need?
- What would you do differently if guilt weren't making the decision?
